Starting out in filmmaking is hard. There’s so much to learn, and it can be quite overwhelming, so in today’s video I’m giving 10 quick tips to anyone starting out in filmmaking


Tip 1

  • Gear doesn’t matter

  • You can shoot on anything

  • Use your phone

  • Work with what you have

Tip 2

  • Sound

  • Don’t neglect sound

  • Sound is 50% or more of filmmaking

  • Link sound design video

Tip 3

  • Have a place to show off your work

  • YouTube

  • Advertise on Instagram

  • Website

Tip 4

  • You improve over time

  • Your first film will look bad, don’t stop

  • Experience is the best way to learn

  • Make as much as possible, you will learn

Tip 5

  • Story is king

  • Tell stories that you are genuinely interested in

  • Not what’s trending

  • Breaking bad story

Tip 6

  • Work with others

  • Make films with other people

  • Collaborate

  • Just with friends

  • People with similar interests

Tip 7

  • Keep your films short

  • Audiences get bored quickly

  • Look for ways to keep the film shorter

  • Some segments can be longer

Tip 8

  • Work on Stabilisation

  • Keep your camera steady

  • You don’t need a gimble

  • Use a tripod for certain shots

  • Handheld works, just keep it as steady as possible and have a reason for using it.

  • Watch YouTube channels to learn

  • It’s how I learnt
